NOTRE DAME, IN, UNITED STATES, October 15, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Senior Director of Financial Aid at the University of Notre Dame Advances Affordability, Sound Policy, and Equitable Access to Higher Education
Notre Dame, Indiana – Mary Nucciarone, Senior Director of Financial Aid at the University of Notre Dame, has dedicated more than four decades to advancing student access to higher education through financial aid leadership. She oversees the administration of hundreds of millions of dollars in federal, state, and institutional financial aid, working closely with students, families, university leadership, and external partners. Her work includes developing policies, enhancing affordability initiatives, and supporting enrollment management, all while fostering equitable access to higher education. Her specialties include student financial aid administration, enrollment management and student access strategy, and higher education policy and compliance.
Mary began her career in 1984 as a temporary employee in a financial aid office, a starting point that grew into an accomplished career in higher education administration. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a minor in Psychology from Marquette University. Her expertise spans student financial aid, enrollment management, nonprofit leadership, public policy, employee training, student development, and higher education administration. Over the years, she has held numerous national and regional leadership roles, including serving as Trustee and Chair of the College Scholarship Service Council with the College Board. Today, she is a member of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators’ Executive Leadership Collective and serves on the Board of Directors for the Private College 529 Plan by CollegeWell. She is also a member of the Indiana Student Financial Aid Administrators and the Midwest Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. Throughout her career, she has been a respected leader in the financial aid profession, and her work with the College Board reflects her longstanding commitment to shaping financial aid policy and advancing best practices across higher education.
Mary attributes her success to the exceptional leaders who have guided and inspired her throughout her career. She considers herself fortunate to have been surrounded by talented people whose mentorship, support, and example shaped her growth. The best career advice she has received was to believe in herself, especially when facing challenges. Over time, she learned to trust her knowledge and abilities, stay confident through difficult periods, and remember that her contributions are valued by the people she works with.
To young women entering the field, Mary recommends staying authentic and pursuing work that truly aligns with their passion. She encourages them to build a career with purpose rather than settling for simply doing a job. She also advises seeking out a mentor early, taking thoughtful risks, and being willing to say no to opportunities that do not fit their values or long-term goals. Looking at her profession today, she sees significant challenges in the impact of public policy, increasing political division, an aging workforce, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence, which is changing how the work gets done.
Honesty, humility, respect, communication, teamwork, accountability, and a strong sense of community are the values Mary holds most dear. She also believes in being present, having fun, and making a positive difference in someone’s day whenever she can. Her service has earned honors including the Rev. William A. Toohey, C.S.C. Award for Social Justice, the Spirit of Holy Cross Award, and the NASFAA Most Valuable Professional Award. She is a longtime board member and past president of the Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County, where she helps expand scholarship opportunities for local students, and she volunteers with Holy Cross Associates. She remains passionate about mentoring students and families and helping future generations achieve their educational goals.
From a temporary position in 1984 to senior leadership at the University of Notre Dame, Mary has spent her career opening doors to education. Her path shows how a single opportunity, embraced with dedication, can grow into a lifetime of meaningful service. Her leadership has shaped financial aid policy, strengthened scholarship opportunities, and supported students and families at pivotal moments. Through her steady commitment to access, integrity, and community, Mary Nucciarone continues to show how thoughtful financial aid leadership can change the course of a student’s life.
