The Mindful MITATE Tea Ceremony experience, right in front of the historic three-story pagoda at the Chinzanso garden, will also be held during spring, coinciding with the cherry blossom season.
This new intimate cultural experience explores Japanese aesthetics and mindfulness through a tea ceremony led by ceramic artist and tea master Shota Yamada.
During the session, participants will first select a tea bowl at one of the garden’s traditional teahouses, Zangetsu, examine it carefully, and share their impressions as Mr. Yamada guides the conversation. The group will then move outside to the lawn in front of the three-story pagoda where guests observe Mr. Yamada prepare tea before trying it themselves. Depending on the weather and timing of the experience, participants may also encounter the hotel's multilayered mist installation, Tokyo Sea of Clouds – YAKUMO –.
The experience centers on "mitate," a Japanese aesthetic concept of viewing an object and discovering personal meaning in it—reflecting a shared approach between Mr. Yamada and Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, both of whom draw on Japanese traditions while presenting them in ways that resonate with contemporary audiences. The lawn, opened exclusively for this activity, sits right in front of the hotel's three-story pagoda, a nationally registered tangible cultural property.
“This new activity offers insight into the subtle nuances of the Japanese tea ceremony tradition while encouraging participants to reflect on their own perspectives," explains Tomohiko Chihiro, General Manager of Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo. “We are excited to collaborate with Shota Yamada and offer our guests this one-of-a-kind experience."
