Multiple explosions, gas leaks and aging infrastructure cause local worries

DALLAS, TX, UNITED STATES, August 24, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Three major residential gas line accidents between March and July 2026 have Dallas homeowners worried about their safety, and Dallas plumbers working off-hours to meet increased emergency repair demand.

In March 2026, a cracked natural gas pipe caused a Lake Dallas home explosion that caused neighborhood evacuations and left a woman in critical condition. Atmos Energy confirmed the damaged pipe was installed in the 1970s.

Just two months later, three residents of The Clyde apartment complex in Oak Cliff died after a contractor struck an unmarked natural gas main. Local Dallas Fire-Rescue workers were conducting an evacuation when the explosion occurred.

And on July 29, Dallas Fire-Rescue evacuated homeowners when a construction crew hit and damaged a 1-inch gas line on the 4700 block of Lake Avenue. No one was injured in the incident.

The trio of incidents has increased the rate of calls to local Dallas plumbing companies and gas line specialists.

“The emergency line in our Dallas office location gets calls about gas line problems most days,” says Mother Modern Plumbing CEO Dustin Marx. “Some during the day, some at 2 a.m. Thankfully, most are false alarms.”

Marx attributes the increase in calls to a shared fear about aging gas line infrastructure in the city, and whether delivery lines in residential neighborhoods are modernized and safe.

“Folks want to know how to protect themselves,” says Mother’s Responsible Master Plumber Steven Smith (RMP-43457). “They want to trust the gas company, but there are still so many old gas lines unaccounted for out there.”

Between 2019 and 2024, Atmos Energy’s Mid-Tex Division invested $10.7 billion to replace outdated natural gas pipes in the DFW Metroplex. Since 2021, Atmos reports all cast iron gas pipes have been removed and eliminated from service.

Still, the recent spike in home gas accidents leaves homeowners looking for answers. Smith outlines ways Dallas residents can protect themselves and their properties.

“There are definitely telltale sights, sounds and smells to watch for,” Smith advises. “Weak, yellow flames from your stove. Hissing sounds near gas appliances. And the gas company adds mercaptan to your incoming gas supply- you’ll smell rotten eggs if there’s a leak.”

Smith urges homeowners who suspect a gas leak to schedule emergency gas leak detection service. He suggests working with contractors who use electronic equipment, not antiquated methods like soap bubble tests.

“Look for plumbers and technicians who use combustible gas indicators, manometers and tracer gas,” he says. “They’re fast, they’re accurate, and there’s no property damage to find the leak.”

Smith also advises homeowners to call a licensed gas technician to assess whether they have the right gas line materials in their home.
