The books are the source of truth...If you don’t know the truth until after it’s happened, that’s a problem.”
MD, UNITED STATES, September 17, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Thorne Advisors partner joins Get Comfy with Numbers to discuss tax strategy, cash flow, entity changes, and building long-term wealth.— Emily Bowie
Getting the books caught up is an important milestone for any business owner—but according to Thorne Advisors partner Emily Bowie, it’s only the beginning.
On a recent episode of Get Comfy with Numbers, Emily joined host Erica Millard to discuss what business owners should do once their bookkeeping is accurate and up to date, including how to identify when they’ve outgrown basic bookkeeping, use tax strategy proactively, and turn business profits into real cash and long-term wealth.
Emily explained that a major red flag is when a business shows significant profit but the owner doesn’t see corresponding cash in the bank. That disconnect may indicate cash leaks, pricing problems, inefficient spending, or other issues that require a more strategic look at the business.
“The books are the source of truth,” Emily said. “If you don’t know the truth until after it’s happened, that’s a problem.”
While bookkeeping provides that essential foundation, Emily emphasized that tax preparation and tax strategy are not the same thing. Not every CPA is a tax strategist, and simply filing an accurate return doesn’t mean a business owner is taking advantage of the strategies available to them.
Effective tax strategy, she explained, should begin with the business owner’s larger goals. Someone planning to apply for a mortgage, for example, may need a very different approach than someone whose primary objective is reducing their tax liability.
Tax strategy can also include evaluating whether a business has the right entity structure and determining when changes may make sense. Emily discussed S Corporation elections as one example, noting that Thorne Advisors generally begins considering the strategy around $100,000 in annual profit—not revenue—while emphasizing that the appropriate decision depends on the individual business.
The conversation also highlighted a frequently overlooked component of tax planning: having enough cash available to implement the strategy.
Emily explained that Thorne Advisors combines tax strategy with cash-flow analysis because reducing taxes often requires business owners to actually deploy cash. By examining the full customer journey, advisors can identify where businesses may be leaking cash or leaving money on the table and potentially redirect those funds toward strategies that support wealth building.
Another key recommendation from Emily was deceptively simple: introduce your financial professionals to one another.
Business owners often have separate bookkeepers, tax professionals, and business strategists who never communicate directly. Emily encouraged owners to bring those professionals into the same conversation so each can contribute their expertise and understand how financial decisions affect the broader business.
She also encouraged business owners to pay attention to how their financial professionals communicate. Feeling intimidated, being unable to ask questions, or routinely waiting months for answers can all be signs that it’s time to find a better fit.
For Emily, the goal is to shift the relationship between business owners and financial professionals from reactive compliance to proactive partnership.
“There is just more that needs to be done,” Emily explained. Once the books are accurate and profit begins growing, business owners have an opportunity to revisit decisions they may have made years earlier and determine whether their current financial structure still supports where they want to go.
