ABA, CHINA, September 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- On the Zoige grasslands of Sichuan Province, at an average altitude of 3,500 meters, a quiet transformation is taking place. Known as a vital “Water Tower” of the Yellow River basin ,Zoige is the country’s largest alpine peat wetland. About 30 percent of the Yellow River’s upstream water originates here. Yet the vast grassland lacks tall trees, making power transmission towers ideal nesting sites for raptors such as saker falcons and upland buzzards.
This once created a dilemma. Bird droppings contaminated insulators, while nesting materials like wire and grass stems caused short circuits and trips. Before 2021, bird-related activity triggered about 15 line trips in Zoige each year. Simply driving the birds away was not a lasting solution. In 2022, State Grid Sichuan Electric Power launched the “Life Nest” public-benefit initiative. Together with ornithologists and forestry and grassland authorities, the team surveyed 12,000 kilometers of power lines and more than 30,000 towers, mapped bird activity, identified key nesting areas, and adopted a solution combining “guidance and deterrence.”
Artificial nests were installed in safe zones on the towers, woven from corrosion-resistant golden vines and secured with insulated wire. The latest 3.0 version is one meter in diameter and 30 centimeters deep, closely mimicking a natural nest. Dynamic rotating devices with mirror reflections were added to tower crossarms, and live parts were insulated to keep birds away from dangerous areas.
The results are encouraging. In the Zoige pilot area, 67 artificial nests and 178 dynamic rotating devices have been installed, attracting more than 200 birds. Saker falcons, upland buzzards and other nationally protected species have laid 58 eggs, with a 100 percent hatching rate. The return of raptors also creates an ecological ripple effect. Plateau pikas are a factor in grassland degradation, and raptors are their natural predators. One raptor family can prey on 600 to 700 pikas in a single breeding season, helping control rodent damage and maintain grassland balance.
Behind the project are two generations of guardians. Kangzhoujia, a Tibetan employee of State Grid’s Aba Power Supply Company, grew up on this grassland. As a child, he listened for the calls of black-necked cranes to find good water and grass. Now, he listens to the hum of electricity to find faults. “The grassland cannot grow tall trees,” he says. “But when the towers went up, the birds found them to be the highest place and came to nest.” Today, the “Snowland Eagle” high-altitude women’s drone patrol team has taken up the baton. Five Tibetan women born after 2000 use drones and AI-adaptive inspection technology to monitor nests. What once took four days of manual inspection now takes just three hours.
The “Life Nest” project is more than a local practice. It has formed a replicable methodology—scientific monitoring, artificial nesting, physical deterrence and digital inspection—offering a model for high-altitude power grid ecological management. It has won more than 10 national, provincial and industry innovation awards. As the sun sets, the calls of cranes mingle with the hum of electricity.
