Members gain access to technology designed to destroy compatible drugs where they are wasted, rather than storing active medication for downstream destruction.
SCOTTSDALE, AZ, UNITED STATES, August 31, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Links Medical Products, Inc. today announced that SafeMedWaste™ is now available to Capstone Health Alliance acute and non-acute members under contract CAP-PH-144.Every healthcare setting that handles controlled substances has the same fundamental challenge. When part of a medication is not administered, what remains is still an active drug. In many existing waste workflows, that medication is placed into a container where it remains until collection and downstream destruction.
SafeMedWaste was developed around a different idea: destroy the compatible medication at the point of waste.
“A drug is still a drug until something actually destroys it,” said Patrick Buckley, CEO of Links Medical Products. “That is the gap SafeMedWaste was built to close. Instead of storing active medication and managing it until downstream destruction, SafeMedWaste gives healthcare teams a way to destroy compatible medications where the waste occurs.”
SafeMedWaste is a patented, charcoal-free, on-site pharmaceutical destruction technology designed to render compatible controlled substances non-retrievable at the point of waste. Under DEA regulations, controlled substances being destroyed by a registrant must be rendered irreversibly non-retrievable, meaning they cannot be transformed to a physical or chemical condition or state as a controlled substance or controlled-substance analogue.
Unlike systems that use charcoal to adsorb and store active pharmaceuticals, SafeMedWaste chemically digests compatible pharmaceuticals. Its compatible drug portfolio has been evaluated by an independent, DEA-licensed laboratory using HPLC-MS/MS testing to assess pharmaceutical destruction.
The technology requires no capital equipment, plumbing, electronics or maintenance and can be deployed where medication waste is generated. Container sizes and placement can be adapted to the care setting and anticipated waste type and volume.
"Capstone Health Alliance works with our members to identify and prevent drug diversion, bringing solutions that support every step of their drug diversion program,” stated Capstone’s Vice President of Pharmacy Services, Fred Pane. “Safe Med Waste closes the loop as the final step, inactivating the drug so waste cannot be used inappropriately or diverted."
“Capstone gives us an opportunity to bring this approach to a broad range of healthcare organizations,” Buckley added. “The conversation we want facilities to have is a simple one: what happens to the drug in the period between the moment it becomes waste and the moment it is actually destroyed?”
SafeMedWaste is available to Capstone members now under contract CAP-PH-144.
