Writer-director-animator-composer Scott Bateman is the one-man creative force behind both films and a wider body of experimental work. A University of Puget Sound graduate, he began as a syndicated political cartoonist and author (Scott Bateman’s Sketchbook of Secrets & Shame, 2006; Disalmanac: A Book of Fact-Like Facts, 2013). His filmmaking credits include the TV series Scott Bateman Presents Scott Bateman Presents (2007), the animated feature Atom Age Vampire (2009), You, Your Brain, & You (2015/2019), The Bateman Lectures on Depression (2018/2020), plus various shorts and music videos. Bateman handles nearly every production role himself—sourcing and manipulating footage (primarily in Photoshop and Premiere Pro), animating via “digital rotoscope” (an evolution of techniques in Richard Linklater’s Waking Life), editing, and scoring. He has described the Space Aliens films as emerging organically from ongoing visual experiments rather than a rigid plan, each requiring roughly four years of full-time work. Influences include experimental cinema, Philip Glass/Stereolab-style music, and a deliberate rejection of conventional three-act narrative.
